Light & Noise Pollution in the Area

Light pollution in the East of England is getting worse

Recent satellite data obtained by the Council for the Protection of Rural England (CPRE) shows us how much night time light is beaming upwards from each square kilometre of the East of England. The data shows that light pollution is both a major problem and one that is growing. Only Norfolk and Suffolk really have any truly dark night skies left. Light pollution is rapidly spreading in the region. Using the  indicator, between 1993 and 2000, light pollution increased 21% across the region and 29% in Cambridgeshire. The amount of land with truly dark skies and light-saturated skies didn’t change significantly between 1993 and 2000, but the amount of area with reasonably dark skies – in the ‘blue’ band – halved.
